About Us

Program Overview

The Minnesota Lake Superior Beach Monitoring Program is based in the Minnesota Department of Health’s (MDH) Northeast District Office in Duluth. Funding for this program comes from the Beaches Environmental Assessment and Coastal Health (BEACH) Act, passed in October of 2000 as an amendment to the Clean Water Act. Results from monitoring are reported annually to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and can be found here along with results from other states and tribes that receive BEACH Act funds.

Beach Team

A Beach Team made up of representatives from various agencies advise the Lake Superior Beach Monitoring Program. Agencies include the University of Minnesota Natural Resources Research Institute, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, Minnesota Sea Grant, Cook County Soil and Water Conservation District, Lake County Public Health, St. Louis County Public Health, the Western Lake Superior Sanitary District and others.

Quality Assurance

Quality data are an integral part of any monitoring program. The Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP) outlines steps that staff must take in order to produce and maintain quality data.
